Course Description

This year-long, required course will begin with a review of 8th grade US History, with an emphasis on the Constitution. The main part of the first semester will start with the Reconstruction of the South after the Civil War, the growth of business and jobs, and finish with World War I. Besides the past and important events of early American history, your reading, writing, and other skills will be expanded.

REQUIREMENTS
You are required to be prepared for class every day. Prepared means to class on time every, unless there is a note from another teacher It also means a pen or pencil and your notebook. The type of notebook does not matter as long as you will be able to SAVE you notes and won't lose them! Don't forget an assignment planner! This may be the most important requirement!

GRADING PROCEDURE
Final semester grades will use the school policy of midterm and finals exams explained in the Student Handbook. But what this means is that your QUARTER grade is the most important.
The quarter grades will utilize a variety of methods to check what was learned. There will be the occasional quizzes and tests. Tests and quizzes will be scored out of 100%, but tests will be counted twice at the end of the quarter. Tests will take an entire class to finish. Quizzes may be unannounced and may take anywhere from half a mod to a full mod to complete.
Homework will also be given throughout the week. It will be graded with an A for completed and correct, B for mostly done and mostly correct, C for done but could be better, D very little completed or correct, and F for not done. Papers and projects, both in the classroom and after school, will be assigned throughout the marking quarter. These will try to make use of rubrics, basically a checkbox so you will know what is needed and the score, usually 100 points. You are encouraged to keep track of your own scores so you will be able to estimate your grade. The grading system for the quarter will be as follows:

MAKEUP/ABSENCE POLICY
Absences and tardiness will be treated according to the rules explained in the handbook. Remember notes for absences and if you are going to be late to class. Detentions and other penalties may arise without passes.
You will be allowed to makeup quizzes. I will take the highest grade, but it will count no more than a 75. Be prepared!!! Late work, for circumstances other than illness or excused absence, will be accepted but for a lower value, whether homework, papers, or projects.

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR
Normal school behavior is expected, especially in accordance with the school handbook. As for the classroom, I will allow students to go to the restrooms for the 1st 7 minutes of class and the last 7 minutes. As with other classes, a pass is needed to leave. They will be on the desk and must be filled out for the teacher to sign. As for talking in class, be polite. Foul language is not needed. To answer a question, make a point, or explain a topic, raise your hand and wait for the teacher to recognize you. If you need to, write your comment on a piece of paper to remember.

HELP
My job is to help you learn US History. In that regard, the Social Studies Department is in PA 103, and I will be available after school almost every day until 3:25 pm. I will be in the Cafeteria for after school detention but any student can stop by for help. Make sure you have what is needed or remind me to bring certain materials if you need any help. Otherwise, see me after class to make other arrangements. I don't know if you need help unless you ask. My e-mail address is smacdonald@mansd.org.
